Orlando Pirates legend Siyabonga Sangweni: Where is he now?

Orlando Pirates legend Doctor Siyabonga Sangweni is a former South African centre back best known for his six-year stint with the Buccaneers.

With a colourful youth career with Royal Chief Doctor Siyabonga Sangweni switched the floor to Uthukela, and the rest was history.

The South African defender is best known for his illustrious career with Soweto giants Orlando Pirates. However, he had 150 appearances for Golden Arrows before he joined Pirates in 2011.

WHAT HAPPENED TO SIYABONGA “NTSIMBI” SANGWENI?

The Orlando Pirates legend had a six-year stint with the DStv Premier League outfit before retiring due to career-threatening injuries.

His retirement was announced on 7 April 2016 in a press conference by Orlando Pirates’ chairman Irvin Khoza. Against the backdrop of his retirement, many have been trying to connect the dots on his whereabouts.

Despite hanging his boots, Siyabonga Sangweni has been involved in football matters across all verticals.

Upon his retirement, he launched several football clinics, with Siyabonga Sangweni Youth Month Festival being one of the most celebrated clinics under his watch.

He also hosts soccer tournaments, with the Siyabonga Sangweni Tournament in Emphangeni being the most recent one.

His clinics have been naturing youngsters and giving them a platform to showcase their talents. On the other hand, he has been vocal in footballing matters and has often featured in several commentaries over the years.

He participated in the recently held celebrity games, which included stars like Junior Khanye, Cassper Nyovest and Big Zulu.

Unconfirmed reports have it that he has also since established himself as a businessman with several investments under his watch.

CAREER

He retired from Pirates as a legend. Apart from his stint at the Pirates, he was also influential in the national team.

Sangweni was part of the star-studded South African 2010 World Cup team. Upon his retirement, he had 29 caps for the national team, 79 for Orlando Pirates, 150 for Golden Arrows and 95 for Uthukela.
