Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs must establish women’s teams

The lack of a senior women’s teams at Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates is a disturbing state of affairs that needs to be remedied.

The lack of a senior women’s teams at Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates is a disturbing state of affairs. 

Banyana Banyana coach Desiree Ellis recently called this out.

Ellis trusts Kaizer Chiefs bigwig Jessica Motaung is good for her a personal promise to get women into the black and gold.

However concerns remain about how long it has taken the Soweto Giants to get on board.

The coach lauded the work done by Mamelodi Sundowns and welcome the announcement that TS Galaxy will be launching a new women’s team.

Sundowns women have become a force on the continent and their efforts ensure that South Africa remains ahead of the pack when it comes to women’s football.

Ellis also gave credit to the teams in the PSL who have established or taken steps towards setting up women’s teams.

She also gave thanks for the help of major sponsor, Hollywoodbets.

South Africa needs women’s teams from Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates

However, she feels that if South Africa are to start competing on the global stage, the level of domestic football needs a shot in the arm.

“We speak about what Mamelodi Sundowns has done for the women’s game. And now that TS Galaxy has also come on board to be part of it,” said Ellis.

“I think it is very important. I think Chiefs and Pirates are brands on their own. And I think they will bring more brands to come on board.

“But I know Jessica said she is planning a women’s team. And I trust her; she will come through with a women’s team.

“It is really important that they come along to raise the levels, to raise the profile. I think we can only go to a different level once they come on board.

“But, big ups to the teams that already have teams in the PSL and Hollywoodbets,” concluded Ellis.
