It was also yet another occasion where teenager Mduduzi Shabalala performed well in a Chiefs first team jersey and won the man of the match award.

Shabalala a fan favourite

Shabalala was one of the names supporters were excited about seeing feature more regularly for Chiefs, after making headlines almost weekly for the club’s reserves. The Amakhosi supporters then found themselves getting a tease of what was to come as the youngster started featuring in coach Arthur Zwane’s early match day squads.

The player would repay Zwane for his faith as he came on to score his first goal for Chiefs in a 3-0 victory over Maritzburg United on 9 August 2022. After that, Shabalala would feature sparingly and disappear from the scene for a while. Zwane would then explain that was due to the player being in Matric at the time and the need to concentrate on his studies.

He has been superb in 2023

Since the turn of the year Shabalala has not only returned to the Chiefs fold, but become a regular starter. He has had four incredible performances in a row, a goal against Golden Arrows, big impact in his first Soweto Derby, a man of the match performance and assist in a 1-0 win against Richards Bay and then another man of the match performance against Casric Stars last night.

Those performances from the 18-year-old have coincided with Chiefs finally getting some much needed momentum towards the business end of the season. After last night’s performance, Shabalala made a bold promise to the Amakhosi family.

His promise to Chiefs fans

“Obviously we trying all our level best to bring back the club to where it belongs and we doing well so far, just that we need to keep on working hard and keep on getting those three points, we’ll get it right. We promise we will keep fighting until the last and thank you for the support” Shabalala said to Supersport TV after the win.
