Unimpressed Maritzburg United chairman Farook Kadodia has blasted the tactics employed by his coach Fadlu Davids upon their relegation.

Maritzburg will now campaign in the Motsepe Championship after failing to get a win against Cape Town Spurs at Harry Gwala Stadium on Wednesday night.

Also known as the Team of Choice, Maritzburg bagged two wins in the Promotion Play-Offs and to save their DStv Premiership status, they needed to beat Spurs but they were held to a goalless stalemate.

Speaking after the draw which spelled their way to the lower division, Maritzburg owner Kadodia expressed unhappiness about Davids’ tactical planning.

The Maritzburg owner said heading to the division also referred to as the National First Division is a bitter pill to swallow.

He reflected on their campaign, saying Maritzburg looked like an away team in the opening stanza and didn’t mince his words in blasting the former Orlando Pirates mentor, Davids.

Kadodia has financially backed the KwaZulu-Natal midlands side for 15 consecutive seasons in the top flight since their last relegation in 2006/2007, and promotion back in 2007/2008.

“Look, it’s a bitter pill to swallow at your home ground,” he said after the match.

“And congratulations to Cape Town Spurs. But we’ll have to regroup and restructure, get back to the drawing board, and find a way forward.

“Correct. We were outright defensive. And I think we were fortunate we managed to get a lifesaver [chance] going into the playoffs. The coaching staff must take full responsibility for their planning because most of our games were defensive.

“This was the pattern for our season. From January, when coach Fadlu came in here, we hardly shot at goal. And tonight you could see it, with not a single shot at their goalkeeper.

“If you want to win, you’ve got to take the match to your opposition. We’ve been complaining that even in our past six to seven games, we haven’t been getting into the box to shoot.”

Looking ahead to the upcoming campaign as they will be in the lower tier, the disappointed Kadodia could not immediately respond to their plans.

The veteran businessman and chairman confirmed that they will go back to the drawing board as the management but said it’s too soon to address their plans.

“I think it’s too soon for me to answer that question. But we’ll have to readdress, go to the boardroom, and say what our way forward is,” he added.

“Because we will need money to go to fund the first division [team]. It’s not going to come up with an ordinary team to fight.

“In the past, the board of directors came up with good capital and we invested in players who could fight to get promoted.

“I think it’s the wrong time to be asking me that question (when asked about accepting an offer for the club).”

The demotion to the Motsepe Championship did not only hurt the bosses but the people of Maritzburg who always rallied behind the club until the last hour.
