Rayners has quite literally had two separate seasons in one. The player started the 2022/23 DStv Premiership season in the colours of SuperSport United under coach Gavin Hunt. After not finding the back of the net at all for the Pretoria-based outfit, the speedy striker turned up the heat, when he returned to the familiar territory of Stellenbosch, for a second spell. Since returning to the Cape Winelands club, he has notched up nine goals and two assists in just eight league matches.

Overall this season, Rayners has scored 15 goals in 25 games in all competitions. That type of form has elevated Stellenbosch to a respectable sixth position on the log and in the semifinal of the Nedbank Cup this season. That has now seen the likes of Chiefs turn their attention to him, in the hopes of fixing their goal scoring woes. It has, however, emerged that their rivals Sundowns are now going to join them in the race for the hot marksman.

Sundowns to rival Chiefs for Rayners?

“It has since emerged that Sundowns have also shown interest in Rayners and could be willing to break the bank for him as Stellenbosch might price him too high, if they’re willing to sell him at all.” Soccer-Laduma wrote.

Both Chiefs and Sundowns are thought to be looking for a striker, with Amakhosi thought to be on the verge of offloading Caleb Bimenyimana already. Sundowns on the other hand could be saying goodbye to Gift Motupa. Should this go down to a bidding war, then it is expected that the Brazilians will win, however, the Glamour Boys have built a good relationship with Stellenbosch in the past, which could come in handy again in this instance.
