A Mamelodi Sundowns star sees his contract come to an end this month, with Kaizer Chiefs monitoring the situation.

Sundowns have just confirmed the departure of five players as well as coach Rulani Mokwena and more exits will come!

Mini exodus at Sundowns

Accompanying Mokwena were his former players Gaston Sirino, Thabiso Kutumela, Brian Onyango and Bongani Zungu. Now according to Power FM’s Skepe Matsebane, there is uncertainty over the future of defender Grant Kekana

Kekana’s current deal is running out at the end of the month, and there is no agreement with Sundowns on a new deal. The player’s agent Steve Kapeluschnik negotiated a possible improved deal with Sundowns Sporting Director Flemming Berg, who initially offered Kekana a two year extension with an option, but his salary was to remain the same. The offer was made just before the previous season ended. Kekana rejected the offer, asking for a three year extension and an improved salary. Sundowns Sporting Director Berg returned with a drastically changed offer last week, now offering Kekana a one year contract without an option and no  salary increase on a take it or leave it basis.

“It is understood that this has left Kekana fuming, and there is a good chance that he could leave Sundowns. His business manager Kapeluschnik held a meeting with Berg to reconsider, but that was to no effect, and now Kekana is ready to walk out at Sundowns. Another round of talks are expected today afternoon with the hope that the impasse can be resolved.  The source further says Kekana is extremely unhappy with how his contribution is viewed by the powers that be at the club. “ Matsebane wrote on his X

Kekana next with Chiefs being an option?

Furthermore, he confirms that his source mentioned that rivals Chiefs are an option for Kekana should this go unsolved.

“Kaizer Chiefs is now an option if Sundowns does not come back with an improved offer. Kekana does not want to leave, but he knows Chiefs can offer better terms,” a source told Matsebane.

Chiefs have just released Njabulo Ngcobo, so bringing in Kekana would be seen as a massive upgrade. He would compete with Given Msimango, Thatayoane Dithlokwe, Zitha Kwinika and Edmilson Dove for a position at centre back.
