Sundowns’ struggle: De Sa lists the reasons

The new DStv Premiership season is yet to see the Mamelodi Sundowns we all know. Roger de Da has offered a few possible reasons for that.

Mamelodi Sundowns have lost two games in six PSL games, are fans feeling concerned yet? Maybe, maybe not, but people are talking.

SUNDOWNS DELIVER SLOW DSTV PREMIERSHIP START

The champions began with a rather mature 2-0 win over Cape Town City on matchday one before surprising defeats to TS Galaxy, SuperSport United, and a draw against Sekhukhune United in between those.

What’s the issue when you consider Rhulani Mokwena and Manqoba Mngqithi’s squad have beefed up with even more quality than last season?

According to Roger de Sa, a Nedbank Cup champion with Bidvest Wits, and MTN8 champion with Ajax Cape Town, Sundowns have created a bit too much instability.

“Well, the way I see it Sundowns have so much quality, so they keep changing the line-ups,” De Sa said via Kick Off.

“I think it affects the players, playing one week then not playing. I think players aim to play every game.

“I think the chopping and changing of the squad sometimes can have a negative impact on the individual players who are used to playing every game at the clubs they come from,” the 2013 CAF Champions League finalist added.

NEW CONDITIONS, OPPOSITION PERFORMANCE, AND TIGHT FIXTURES

“They were stars at those clubs, and arrive at Sundowns and become contributors to an already fantastic squad,” de Sa added.

“When players play three or four consecutive games they automatically become better players.

“Also opposition players are motivated when they face Sundowns, as they know they might be recruited to Sundowns.

“When a league is too congested in such a short space of time, results are always going to be like that.

“You can see already that results are pretty inconsistent with no team really being consistent so far this season.

“I think a player who signs for Sundowns has a vision that he is going to play every week.

“I don’t think any player plans to play only five or ten games per season.

“But at Sundowns there’s intense competition for those eleven spots,” the former Sundowns goalkeeper concluded.
