Mamelodi Sundowns chase midfielder Mthethwa from Soweto giants! 

Mamelodi Sundowns might of signed Bathusi Aubaas for their midfield during the previous transfer window, but they are not thought to be done yet.

Sundowns are believed to be still in search of a holding midfielder who can fill the void left by Andile Jali, who was released by the club.

Jali saw his contract terminated early at Sundowns, after disciplinary issues saw him sidelined for the whole second half of the previous DStv Premiership season. He has since joined Moroka Swallows, where he plays in the midfield with Tlakusani Mthethwa. Now, in a strange turn of events, that seems to be where the Brazilians have cast their eye for a replacement for their long-term anchorman.

This is not the first time Mthethwa’s name has been brought up as a possible replacement for Jali, with The South African News also reporting Sundowns’ interest in the player, early on in the previous transfer window.  In the end, however, it was Aubaas that was signed by the defending league champions. But now, according to Soccer-Laduma, they may have made progress in their pursuit of the player, ahead of the January transfer window. 

Sundowns ready to test Swallows for Mthethwa

“Sundowns still want Tlakusani (Mthethwa). It’s not like they stopped their interest in him. It was just time that was not on their side at that time, They are waiting for the next transfer window to see what can happen in January. They want to improve their defensive midMeld and that’s why they are looking at him. They just want to open talks with Swallows and then take it from there,” said a source to the publication.

A secondary source also claimed that Swallows see this as their last opportunity to cash in on Mthethwa, with Sundowns ready to oblige. 

Dube Birds to cash in?

“Swallows don’t want to let him go for free and this is the chance for them to cash in on his move so I think they will give Sundowns the chance. His contract ends in June 2025 and if they sell him now it will be good income for the club, But let’s wait and see what will happen between the two teams in January. Sundowns really want the player at this moment,” said the other source to the same publication.

When it comes to Sundowns, who they want, they usually get. Will the same apply in their pursuit of Mthethwa?
