Ashley du Preez scored the only goal of the game just before the half-time break, and Chiefs failed to come back and at least salvage a draw.

Stuart Baxter made two changes to the previous starting line-up with Cole Alexander and Daniel Cardoso returning to the team.

Chiefs started off well with Cardoso nearly finding the back of the net just six minutes into the game after Sage Stephens had parried the ball onto his path.

However, Cardoso failed to hit the target as he blasted his attempt into the side of the net from close range.

Du Preez then went stormed into the Chiefs box as Stellenbosch looked to score in the 16th minute but his shot was easily saved by Daniel Akpeyi.

Chiefs were in total dominance but they couldn’t turn that into goals, and they were punished in the 36th minute as Du Preez scored a stunner to hand Stellenbosch the lead.

The home side tried hard to equalize before the break but it wasn’t to be as the visitors went into the dressing rooms in high spirit.

Stellenbosch put Chiefs under pressure at the start of the second half with the tempo of their game still high up.

Du Preez came close to grabbing a brace on the hour-mark but his low strike came off the woodwork with Akpeyi well beaten.

Baxter made a change 10 minutes later as Nkosingiphile Ngcobo entered the field in place of Alexander.

And the left-footer imposed himself into the game with some nice touches as Chiefs showed some sense of urgency in the final third.

Billiat then came close to getting that important goal with five minutes to go as he beat a number of defenders before skying his attempt over the crossbar.

Ultimately, Chiefs fell to Stellenbosch who remain unbeaten in the league this season, and appear to be the dark horses in the race for the league title.
