Orlando Pirates have secured a MTN8 place next season and are fighting hard for a coveted CAF Champions League spot as well.

They are also into the Nedbank Cup final which will be held on Saturday, 1 June.

Orlando Pirates currently have the MTN8 trophy in their cabinet having won this season’s tournament – and R8 million for doing so.

All in all, it’s been a great season for the Buccaneers.

By contrast, it’s been a forgettable season – again – for fellow Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs.

Amakhosi are currently languishing down in eighth place in the DStv Premiership standings with no hope of African football next season.

They are battling to secure a MTN8 place next season to save a wretched campaign to some degree.

Bragging rights

As reported by The South African website, Orlando Pirates are assured of finishing the 2023/2024 DStv Premiership season with bragging rights as the top Soweto side.

The Buccaneers are currently third in the standings and occupy a CAF Confederation Cup berth for next season.

Orlando Pirates have 49 points after 28 matches.

They are currently 14 points clear of Kaizer Chiefs.

Amakhosi have just 35 points from a similar number of fixtures.

That means the best Kaizer Chiefs can do – should they win their final two matches – would be six more points and a final tally of 41.

But who do the two Soweto sides still need to play this season in the DStv Premiership – and when?

ORLANDO PIRATES REMAINING FIXTURES

KAIZER CHIEFS REMAINING FIXTURES

Goals scored

One of the main reasons for Orlando Pirates’ success this season has been their form in front of goal – and their mean defence.

The Buccaneers have scored 43 goals (second highest in the league) while they have conceded 24 goals (fifth fewest) for a goal differential of +19.

By contrast, Kaizer Chiefs have only scored 25 goals (seventh fewest) and have conceded 28 for a goal differential of -3.

Head-to-head

How have Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs done in head-to-head battles over the years?

Remarkably, in the 27 completed seasons since the PSL era kicked off in 1996/1997, Kaizer Chiefs have finished ahead of Orlando Pirates on 14 occasions with the Buccaneers claiming bragging rights 13 times.

However, when the current campaign wraps up towards the end of May, that ‘score’ will be level at 14-all.

The biggest difference in final finishing positions to SEVEN (for both sides).

Kaizer Chiefs finished ahead of Orlando Pirates by seven spots in the 2016/17 season (4th v 11th), while Orlando Pirates finished seven places in front of Kaizer Chiefs in 2018/19 (2nd v 9th).
