Kaizer Chiefs are NOT going to give up on the DStv Premiership title despite being 16 points behind log leaders Mamelodi Sundowns.

And that’s according to Stuart Baxter who sounded confident enough after steering Chiefs to a 2-1 win over arch-rivals Orlando Pirates on Saturday.

Amakhosi are currently sitting on 35 points while Sundowns are on 51 points – but the Soweto giants have four games in hand, and that’s if they will be allowed to play the two fixtures they didn’t honour in December 2021.

However, Baxter has already done his math, and he strongly believes Chiefs can throw the title race wide open provided they win the four games.

With those games in hand, Chiefs can reduce Sundowns’ 16-point gap over them to just four provided they win all.

In addition, Amakhosi still have to play Sundowns, and should they topple them, that gap would be reduced to just one point going into the final matches of the season.

With Sundowns having suffered a shock 1-0 loss to Maritzburg United on Saturday, Baxter feels that the Tshwane giants are still going to drop more points in their remaining seven league matches.

But for Chiefs to not hold their breathe over Sundowns dropping points, all they should do is to win their matches and breath heavily on the neck of the defending champions, said Baxter.

“I run the risk of being branded a complete fool for thinking this but the two games that we couldn’t play could go anywhere. We don’t know what is going to happen regarding that situation,” Baxter told journalists.

“We have to keep putting pressure on Sundowns. If we are given those two games to play then that’s a potential six points which takes us closer to them.

“We still have to play Mamelodi Sundowns again, and if we can beat them in that game and keep breathing down their neck then maybe they’ll drop a few more points. They’re engaged on more than one front and they know that it’s their league to lose,” he said.

“What Kaizer Chiefs are going to do is to keep breathing down their necks as hard as we can and for as long as we can so that when we get to play them that game actually means something.”

“I know we could lose our next game and then all hope goes out the window, that’s a possibility but as a Chiefs coach, every win we get prolongs the possibility of us catching them,” concluded Baxter.
