Kaizer Chiefs hand huge reward to teenage sensation!

Kaizer Chiefs have confirmed that young playmaker Mfundo Vilakazi has been handed a senior contract. 

Vilakazi was recently promoted to the Chiefs first team in 2024 and made his debut in the Nedbank Cup. 

That was not the most memorable debut for Vilakazi, however, as Chiefs would go on to be upset by Milford FC. The Motsepe Foundation Championship side knocked Amakhosi out of the cup in the round of 32. The teenager would then go on to make his second appearance in a cameo against Orlando Pirates in the Soweto Derby. The 3-2 loss means he is yet to win a game with the senior team.

Vilakazi will hope to change that though, in the last remaining games for Chiefs. Upon signing his contract, he couldn’t hide his delight.

Vilakazi happy to sign senior Chiefs deal

“I’m happy and excited to have a contract with a big Club like Chiefs. It has always been my dream from a young age to play for the senior team and represent Kaizer Chiefs. I am looking forward to contributing to the Club and paying back the management for believing in my talent. I thank all the supporters who always push me to do better, I promise not to disappoint.” Said Vilakazi.

Chiefs sporting director Kaizer Motaung Jnr believes the Vilakazi deal is testament to their polished academy structures. 

Motaung praises club structures

“We are very excited to be able to conclude this contract extension. Mfundo (Vilakazi) is an exceptional talent and we are looking forward to seeing him showcase his God-given technical ability with the senior team for many years to come. It’s now all about the hard work for the young man and we know he will do his best. Mfundo’s promotion is a testament to the great work in our development structures. We have built an environment that is conducive to producing talent for the senior team, which is fundamental to the ethos of Kaizer Chiefs. We have some hard-working people – from under-13 to the reserve side – who do not focus purely on winning but mainly on producing top footballers for the senior team.” Said Motaung Jnr.

Furthermore, Vilakazi will now hope to be part of Chiefs’ travelling party to KwaZulu-Natal to take on Richards Bay.
