Kaizer Chiefs eye opportunity to end four-year cup drought

Kaizer Chiefs have one of the tougher draws in the Telkom Knockout, but are determined to use their opening fixture as a springboard towards their first trophy in four years.

The Glamour Boys were drawn away to Cape Town City in the Round of 16 stage of the competition – a club that has proven to be far from pushovers despite being one of the newest in the top flight.

The tournament presents another opportunity for the Soweto giants to end their trophy drought, after coming agonisingly close to doing so towards the end of the previous season.

After making the Nedbank Cup final – where the lost to first division outfit TS Galaxy – the club has moved on from the embarrassment of that particular night, and have started the new campaign as the team to beat.

Chiefs currently top the league standings, with their Telkom Knockout opponents among the sides they have beaten to summit the table.

Goalkeeper, Daniel Akpeyi says they are working to build on their good start to the season.

“We have started well this season,” he said after the draw. “We are still working on sharpening some elements of our game. It is still early in the season, but we are happy with the progress thus far and ready for any opponent.”

A return to a happy hunting ground

Chiefs return to the Mother City for the second time in the space of weeks, following their spectacular comeback victory against Cape Town City last time out.

Akpeyi says the team is looking forward to trekking down to the coast once more.

“This is another opportunity for us to win a trophy. We are looking forward to our travel to Cape Town and do the rest of the talk on the field of play.”

Cape Town has, in recent years, turned out to be a happy hunting ground for Kaizer Chiefs, who have had the upper hand over City on their own turf.

Prior to the current season, Amakhosi had registered two victories on the bounce away to the Citizens, winning 2-0 in September 2017, before scoring an emphatic 4-1 victory almost to the day a year later.
