Hire and fire approach not working for Kaizer Chiefs

Chelsea in the Premier League has been doing it since 2005 with unbelievable success, but the blueprint of hiring and firing managers in quick succession doesn’t work for everybody. Stuart Baxter was the last Chiefs boss to lift silverware, the 2014-15 DStv Premiership title and eight managers have come and gone since then, including Baxter himself for a second unsuccessful stint.

Eight managers, zero trophies

Steve Komphela joined the club when Baxter left in 2015. Ugandan former Chiefs star Patrick Mabedi followed but only lasted 68 days at the helm at Naturena as caretaker boss in 2018. Giovanni Solinas, Ernst Middendorp, Gavin Hunt and Arthur Zwane’s first stint (lasting only 12 days) all yielded no silverware. Baxter returned in 2021 for just under a year but to no avail. Zwane lasted just over a year in his second stint but was sacked in June this year. Molefi Ntseki is the most recent Amakhosi boss to get the axe, he lasted just 114 days in the hot seat. How will new man Cavin Johnson fare? He’s the ninth different man entrusted with this enormous burden since Baxter’s glorious run in 2015.
