ICYMI: One massive decision for Molefi Ntseki

Kaizer Chiefs becoming more efficient?

For long periods of the 2022-23 campaign, Chiefs under Arthur Zwane looked like a sterile side that hogged possession but didn’t do an awful lot with it. New coach Molefi Ntseki has endured a tough start to his tenure this season, make no mistake, however, his side is starting to find its identity slowly but surely.

Against Stellenbosch, The Glamour Boys claimed a 2-0 win away from home from just three shots on target. Talk about being clinical in front of goal. They also only had 49% of the ball possession. Against AmaZulu in the previous round, Amakhosi were similarly efficient, scoring thrice from four shots on target. They only enjoyed 41% possession against Usuthu.

The Baxter Blueprint

Stuart Baxter’s successful Kaizer Chiefs teams of 2012-2013 and 2014-2015, DStv Premiership champions in both of those seasons, were a counter-attacking outfit of enormous menace. Josta Dladla, George Lebese, Katlego Mphela and Siphiwe Tshabalala all thrived under Baxter’s tutelage in this system designed to cause damage in transitional situations. The Chiefs class of 2023-24 is starting to see a good output from counter-attacking weapons Pule Mmodi and Christian Saile in the same way. When he gets back into the side, youngster Mduduzi Shabalala will also be a highly effective tool in Ntseki’s arsenal.

MTN8 blockbuster on the horizon

Chiefs are likely to cede the majority of ball possession to Sundowns in Saturday’s MTN8 sem-final second leg. From what we’ve learned in recent weeks, the Glamour Boys might well be at their most dangerous when they don’t have the ball. It should certainly be a fascinating contest.
