The Kaizer Chiefs coaching situation remains a big subject of speculation. Let’s look at one of the reported targets: Raul Caneda.

KAIZER CHIEFS COACH TARGET RAUL CANEDA’S EXPERIENCE

It’s well known as this point. Amakhosi are in the market for a new coach. Molefi Ntseki left the seat in October 2023. The former Bafana Bafana boss left after fans launched violent attacks on him after four wins, three draws and six defeats in 13 games.

The next Chiefs coach was Cavin Johnson as an interim. Johnson, who moved from his previous Head of Youth role, has not truly inspired his bosses. The Johannesburg-born coach has delivered five wins, three draws and four defeats in 12 games.

Some of the notable losses were against lower division club Milford FC in the Nedbank Cup first round. The KwaZulu Natal-based side is placed 14th in the 16-team Motsepe Foundation Championship (MFC).

The interim Chiefs coach also disappointed with a 3-2 loss to bitter rivals Orlando Pirates in the Soweto derby last weekend.

Additionally, the club’s chairman, Kaizer Motaung, confirmed to the media in December 2023 that the club is in the process of finding a new coach for next term.

According to recent reports, one of the Chiefs’ possible next coaches is the Spaniard Caneda.

HOW’S HIS EXPERIENCE?

One of the major criterions for any job is experience, particularly for the hottest seat in South African sport.

Foreign coaches can have all the knowledge and skills, but where one has worked, holds strong weight. Cultural and player dynamics differ in every country and often require time for adaptation.

Is the next possible Chiefs coach Caneda equipped? Sort of, yes. Caneda has worked in four different countries; Spain, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates.

  1. Real Sociedad (Spain)
  2. Dorados de Sinaloa (Spain)
  3. UD Almería (Spain)
  4. Al-Ittihad (Saudi Arabia)
  5. Al-Nassr (Saudi Arabia)
  6. Umm Salal SC (Qatar)
  7. Khor Fakkan (United Arab Emirates).

As far as trophy accolades, Caneda has no recorded silverware.

Should Caneda be given the opportunity as the next Chiefs coach? Let us know in the comments section below.

In the meantime, the current Chiefs coach, Johnson, has a game to focus on. Amakhosi will travel to the Western Cape to face Cape Town City. The match is scheduled for Saturday, 30 March, at the DHL Stadium at 15:30.
