On Wednesday, 5 January, the Premier Soccer League (PSL) will host a press conference to outline its intentions on the matter involving Amakhosi.

At the start of December 2021, Chiefs couldn’t honour two of their league fixtures against Cape Town City and Golden Arrows.

And that’s because Chiefs were hit by the Covid-19 outbreak within their camp with over 50 positive cases during that two-week period.

THE BACKGROUND OF CHIEFS VS PSL SAGA

At first, Chiefs reported 31 positive cases, and they wrote to the PSL requesting for the postponement of all their December fixtures.

The PSL appeared to have acceded to Amakhosi’s request as there was no word from them leading up to the two fixtures.

The log table also didn’t include the two fixtures and still doesn’t as the matter is considered delicate and sensitive.

However, the PSL hit back with rather a vague statement that didn’t entirely address the matter but only that it had rejected Chiefs’ request to have their fixtures postponed.

THE RULES ARE AGAINST CHIEFS

According to the rules regarding Covid-19 and the honouring of fixtures, the PSL resolved in December 2020 that no team would use Covid-19 as an excuse for not honouring their fixtures.

However, Chiefs are likely to contest that in their arguments as they have made it clear that they will appeal the PSL’s decision to reject their request.

Should Chiefs eventually lose this case, the rules permit that they forfeit the two matches – meaning both Cape Town City and Golden Arrows.

The matter is likely to go the legal route should Chiefs not have it their way in the fight for what they believe is right.

Amakhosi have reiterated that their primary obligation in all this was the health of their employees and nothing more.
