Kaizer Chiefs already set to lose key man Edson Castillo? 

Kaizer Chiefs are believed to be fighting off interest in key midfielder Edson Castillo, after just one season at Naturena.

Castillo was Chiefs’ standout performer during the first half of the season, adjusting well to the local league.

The Venezuelan joined Chiefs from Monagas SC and hit the ground running for Chiefs. The 29-year-old has been a mainstay in the clubs midfield, both in defence and attack. His box-to-box nature has seen him make some big tackles, telling passes and even arrive late to score himself. Castillo has already bagged five goals in all competitions for the club so far.

His performances have caught more than just the eye of the South African football fraternity, with some continental rivals also rumoured to be interested in taking Castillo away from Chiefs.

Zamalek want Castillo from Chiefs

“The news about the interest from Zamalek came in late towards the end of the transfer window period in January. But I don’t think even if it came early that Chiefs would’ve agreed to a deal. He is one of their best players this season and I don’t think they can just let go of such a player. But again, in football everything depends on the financial involvement between the concerned parties. And mine you, so far it is just an inquiry and interest which could go either way. Agree or deny. But Zamalek are coming in hard and strong on this one, that I can tell you.” Said one source to Soccer-Laduma.

A different source told the publication that a new Chiefs coach could end up deciding Castillo’s fate.

“ What will happen now is that the new head coach, if they change is the one who will determine whether Zamalek can have Castillo or not. Because coach Cavin (Johnson) would not allow that. He is one of the number one names on the team sheet.” Said the second source.

It would definitely be tragic for Chiefs fans to see, arguably their player of the season in Castillo leave so soon.
