Ighodaro: Chiefs and Chippa in tussle for Sundowns striker?

Kaizer Chiefs and Chippa United are reportedly battling it out to land Mamelodi Sundowns striker Etiosa Ighodaro.

Mamelodi Sundowns are yet to decide on the future of striker Etiosa Ighodaro who is on loan at Chippa United but it seems the Chilli Boys want to retain him and Kaizer Chiefs are keen to sign him.

Ighodaro spent the previous campaign at Chippa on loan from Sundowns but the latest information surfacing indicates that the likes of Chiefs are interested.

The talented striker is also reportedly courted by French side Stade Rennes who have joined Chiefs and Chippa in looking to capture Ighodaro’s signature.

According to a local football publication, the Nigerian striker’s future is still a subject of speculation as there are many clubs vying for his signature.

The Gqeberha-based Chippa has emerged as a strong contender with competition from Chiefs as they seek to retain a striker from Sundowns. 

According to Phakaaathi sources, Chippa are keen to keep Ighodaro for another season but they face competition from Chiefs and Rennes.

“They want the loan deal to be extended for at least another season. Ighodaro was crucial in Chippa’s campaign and they want to keep him,” said a source.

“It will however be difficult because his management has also received good offers from overseas suitors. But the buck will stop with Sundowns.”

Looking at his displays as Sundowns won the DStv Premiership title, the 21-year-old scored 11 goals out of 27 appearances across all competitions for the Chilli Boys.

Aware of the interest from prominent clubs like Amakhosi, Rennes, Zamalek, and KVC Westerlo, Chippa are said to have moved quickly to open negotiations with Sundowns.

The football website reports that considering Mokwena’s admiration for young players, it is highly likely that Ighodaro might stay and fight for his place.

The West African will battle it out against the likes of Peter Shalulile and Cassius Mailula for a spot in the starting eleven.

“Rulani likes young players he can groom into top players and Ighodaro has shown potential, so he might want him back,” added the informant. 

It is mentioned that if Mokwena is not keen on having the youngster in his team next season, his agent is open to negotiating Ighodaro’s release.
