Former Kaizer Chiefs defender, Godfrey Walusimbi has shed some light on how his stint at Naturena became an all-too-brief one.

The Ugandan international arrived at the Glamour Boys under a cloud of controversy, with Kenyan outfit Ghor Mahia crying foul over the methods used by the Soweto giants to nab his signature.

After only half a season in the PSL, where he made 14 appearances across all competitions, the player was let go on the final day of the January transfer window and currently finds himself without a club.

Speaking to the Sunday Monitor, Walusimbi had very few kind words for his former employers, as he revealed how things just did not work out.

“They told me that because I’m a national team player, I needed to get playing time, and therefore I should allow and go to Chippa United on loan.

“This was on the last day of transfers. I asked them why they didn’t tell me early enough for me to prepare myself because they knew this was their plan all along. I just decided to come back home and work alone as I awaited another opportunity. I just wanted to be free.”

Despite not having played a competitive game since Chiefs 2-1 loss to Mamelodi Sundowns on 5 January, Walusimbi is in line to add to his 93 international caps, after being called up to Sebastien Desabre’s Uganda squad for their Afcon 2019 qualifier against Tanzania.

He believes his premature stint at Naturena has not dented his confidence.

“It didn’t break me. I just came back home and continued to work hard and good enough, the coach knows my qualities, and here I am. I’m hungrier than ever.”
