Under fire Kaizer Chiefs coach Gavin Hunt has conceded that the form of the club’s current longest-serving player, goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune, is of major concern.

MATCH REPORT | AMAZULU INFLICT MORE PAIN ON KAIZER CHIEFS

Khune made a somewhat surprising return to Kaizer Chiefs starting line-up for their DStv Premiership match against AmaZulu on Wednesday, 17 February.

That ended a two-month absence after he was dropped in December 2020 following a series of costly blunders in goal.

However, the 33-year-old failed to grasp the opportunity afforded to him as he once again struggled, allowing AmaZulu to win 2-1 at the FNB Stadium.

In a staggering stat, the former Bafana Bafana No 1 has now conceded 12 of Amakhosi’s 19 goals (63%) in the DStv Premiership this season as they slumped to their sixth defeat in 16 games.

After those 16 matches this season, Kaizer Chiefs only have 18 points – exactly HALF of leaders Mamelodi Sundowns.

Kaizer Chiefs have won four, lost six and drawn six of their matches to date.

They have also only scored 17 goals (while conceding 19) at an average barely over a single goal per match.

Asked to reflect on the shortcomings in the goalkeeping department, particularly that of Itumeleng Khune, Gavin Hunt conceded that there are huge concerns while also suggesting that the issue goes beyond the glaring goalkeeping mistakes witnessed on the pitch.

“Ja, it’s not the place nor the forum to talk, sorry to talk like that, but it’s a big concern – yes – since I’ve been here,” said the four-time league-winning coach post-match.

“So ja, it’s something we just have to keep working on and hopefully we can improve there but it’s certainly… I think it’s a bit more than that, that you’ve mentioned, but it’s something that’s a concern – a big concern.”
