The former Blackburn Rovers and West Ham United striker was a shock appointment for Manchester United at the time. This was due to the fact that McCarthy had been clubless for a while. The former Bafana Bafana star was sacked as head coach of DStv Premiership side AmaZulu FC. So for him to go from the wilderness to a first-team coaching role of his dream club, was massive news.

McCarthy set to leave Manchester United

McCarthy’s time at Manchester United has been largely successful. In his first season at the club, the Red Devils finished third on the log. Additionally, he was able to win silverware via the Carabao Cup. He also helped the side reach the FA Cup final. During that season, he was also praised for improving the forward line. England international, Marcus Rashford had a purple patch after the 2022 FIFA World Cup, and credited the former FC Porto hitman for playing his part in that.

This past season has been tougher for McCarthy and Manchester United, however. The club finished eighth and with a negative goal difference. But in the end, they were able to win yet another piece of silverware through the FA Cup. Now according to reports from The Mirror, that could be his last trophy at the club.

On Wednesday, this publication reported that should McCarthy leave Manchester United, he would gladly take the vacant Chiefs job. Although not known to be on the list of candidates, his availability would surely put a spanner on the works!

Furthermore, having spent two years at one of the biggest football institutions in the world, McCarthy’s reputation has since enhanced. While Pitso Mosimane and Alexandre Santos remain the top targets for Chiefs, recent comments from the ex-Usuthu coach could sway them. The way he was giving the club praise, seems like he was sweet-talking for an appointment. That or a person knowing he was about to be jobless and hoping to land the biggest job in South African football.

Chiefs now on high alert?

This one could certainly be the one to watch, provided Manchester United formally announce McCarthy’s exit. This before Chiefs announce their new coach. Would you like the Orlando Pirates legend at the helm of your club, Amakhosi fans?
