Coach Johnson speaks plans on Chiefs burly striker

Kaizer Chiefs interim coach Cavin Johnson speaks about their plans for burly striker Ranga Chivaviro after the loss in the Soweto Derby.

Johnson says they tried to use Chivaviro against Orlando Pirates defender Tapelo Xoki as they looked to beat Orlando Pirates.

Chiefs went to the Soweto Derby chasing their second DStv Premiership win on the trot but they failed to do so at FNB Stadium.

CHIEFS COACH JOHNSON ON PLANS FOR BURLY STRIKER

In his reaction after the Soweto derby last weekend, Johnson says there are a lot of moments where he can use the burly Chiefs striker.

“There are a lot of moments where you can see we try to use him, and we tried to use him against Thapelo [Xoki], knowing what type of player Ranga is, because then automatically two players are out of the game,” said Johnson.

“So we [would have] had nine players and they only eight players, so we need to bring the ball to him quicker, but that was not happening.

“So we’re happy with where he is, and we just have to, like somebody eluded to, have composure on the ball, and we need to make the right choices in passing so we can get the ball to Ranga.

“But it will take time and, you’ve seen, sometimes in the games we’re able to get there, but not as often as I’d like us to get there.”

JOHNSON ON CHIEFS SYSTEMS AGAINST PIRATES

The former Platinum Stars and SuperSport United mentor, Johnson adds that football is not played using systems.

This comes after a lot has also been made out of Johnson’s statement that he doesn’t believe in systems.

At the same time, he also explained his tactics for this game against Pirates, like the role he wanted midfielder Nkosingiphile Ngcobo to play at the Calabash.

“Football is not played with systems, but at the same time, when you look at how Mshini played, we want wanted him to play a little different role – not as a full number-10 but a little bit off, so that we could get Castillo in at the back,” adds the 65-year-old.

“But it didn’t work, so we had to do something else, and that’s when we put on Mmodi, Saile, and ‘Shaba’ [Mduduzi Shabalala].”

After the current FIFA international break, Amakhosi will turn their focus to a crucial encounter against Moroka Swallows away from home on Sunday, October 26.
