Chiefs coach will ‘most definitely’ look to sign new players

Chiefs coach Arthur Zwane has made no secret of the fact that they will look to bolster the squad in the next transfer window.

Chiefs did make some notable changes to both their management and playing group during the pre-season, and there have been some encouraging signs recently to suggest that a “rebuilding phase” could start to reap rewards in the near future.

However, there is still talk that Amakhosi could look to make a couple more squad additions in the next transfer window, with the recent loss to Chippa once again highlighting that Chiefs are far from the finished product.

This past weekend Zwane was asked whether the club would look to add more players to their squad when the transfer window re-opens in January, and he responded emphatically.

“Most definitely,” he stated, as quoted by SABC Sport. “The plan we had was to give all the players we had an opportunity because we are in sort of a rebuilding phase, we are a work in progress, and we wanted to see before we start releasing players.

“Firstly, we wanted to see and give a lot of players an opportunity because when you are building a style of play and identity, you want to give most of the players a fair chance. And the identity itself, or style of play, will obviously talk to the players that can fit in and also those who cannot fit in, and from there you can see as to who you have to bring in, in terms of beefing up the team and who you have to release.”

Zwane is looking for the team to be more clinical in front of goal, and he recently revealed that they need a player who can also ease some of the pressure and responsibility on Kgaogelo Sekgota.

“Now we need to balance our play obviously, going forward,” Zwane said last week. “We need another player that can take the responsibility off his (Sekgota’s) shoulders on the right… so when you look back, the style of Chiefs, we used to dominate from the wingers. You would have players who were very good one vs one, they would skin you, bring on crosses, look for combinations, and on the other side it was the same.”

According to Phakaaathi, Stellenbosch star Sibongiseni Mthethwa has been identified by Kaizer Chiefs as one player they could look to sign in the next transfer window.

Mthethwa has impressed for Stellenbosch since making the move from Black Leopards, while he has recently even earned a call-up to Bafana.

“I think his showing for Bafana sealed the deal for him and Chiefs will definitely go for him in January,” the Phakaaathi sourced said. “I hear they might even offer one of their central midfielders to sweeten the deal which should not be too difficult as the two teams have a good relationship when it comes to transfers. It is him (Mthethwa) and a striker whose identity I do not know yet who are the main targets for the January transfer window.”

Interestingly, sporting director Kaizer Motaung Jr has also confirmed to iDiski Times that the club are busy with changes in their scouting department.

“We are busy with the scouting department, we also have identified a few candidates in certain positions, and we will be adopting a different direction, something we haven’t done before,” he added.

“That’s an integral part to us achieving some success and also some of the boys that you are seeing now, that’s already part of the process of our scouting already.

“It’s well on the way and the new structure is coming and looking forward to what it can achieve for us.
