Although Chiefs produced a competitive performance against Mamelodi Sundowns on Saturday, there was ultimately no stopping The Brazilians from stretching their lead atop the DStv Premiership to a yawning 17 points with a 1-0 win.

Mamelodi Sundowns now sit emphatically at the summit of the standings with 46 points after 18 matches, while Kaizer Chiefs are in fifth place with 24 points after 17 games.

After the match, Zwane boldly suggested that Chiefs could have – and perhaps should have – won the game if they had been more clinical when it came to taking their chances, although that has so often been the story of the season.

“We had a plan and our plan was for them to play the ball inside, we’re gonna get the ball there,” he told SuperSport TV. “And from first half, we had about five of those, similar, where we get the ball and give the ball back to them.

“Final third entry, where we know we could’ve done better, poor decision-making and it happened again second half. If we were clinical, we could’ve scored four or five goals. If you look at how many balls sometimes even Ronwen (Williams) tried to play and then it hit one of our players, fell in our paths, then we just have to punish them.

“But again we [don’t]. We had numbers, 3 vs 2, 3 vs 1, the decision-making let us down again. It’s one of those things, it wasn’t to be but second half was far better than first half. I think first half we were a bit sluggish, we showed them too much respect.

“But second half we started with (Siyethemba) Sithebe who gave us that balance, we started now looking like we could dictate terms in the middle. It got better and better as the game progressed.”

Chiefs are now a distant fifth on the DStv Premiership table
