Orlando Pirates‘ midfield hardman Makhehlene Makhaula scored his first goal in eight years last Saturday against AmaZulu in the Nedbank Cup. He has explained why the celebration was hilarious.

The occasion was a Nedbank Cup quarterfinal under the lights at Moses Mabhida Stadium. Orlando Pirates and Usuthu were tied at 2-2, with goals from Hendrick Ekstein, Patrick Maswanganyi, Taariq Fielies, and Kabelo Dlamini. Orlando Pirates soon went 3-2 up, thanks to Makhaula with a goal against his old club. The player known as “Ace,” speedily ran across the pitch to hug his goalkeeper Sipho Chaine and was then substituted for exhaustion.

Speaking to the club’s media after the game, the Randfontein-born Makhaula said Chaine had predicted that he was going to score his first goal in eight years.

“Before the game, Chaine came to me and made a bold prediction that I would score,” Makhaula told Orlando Pirates media.

“At the time, I didn’t take it seriously, considering I hadn’t scored in over eight years. So, when the moment arrived, the first person that came to mind was Chaine. I sprinted so hard, but my body betrayed me,” the 34-year-old concluded.

Staying with Orlando Pirates, the club’s icon Jomo Sono once told the club to release the retired number 10 shirt. Sono later seemed to change his mind when it was suggested that Monnapule Saleng should be given the special jersey.

“I really don’t have a problem with anyone wearing it at Pirates,” Sono said, as quoted by News24 in 2015.

“To be honest with you, they [Orlando Pirates] can give it to anybody they want. The jersey doesn’t play football, it is the player who plays. Back then, it was not the no.10 jersey on Jomo that played, but it was Jomo playing for [Orlando] Pirates wearing jersey no.10…

Sono changed his tune two years ago…

“At this point in time, there is no one because the Jomo they are talking about… the one who used to wear the No.10 jersey, was unique, he was different,” Sono said in 2022.

“He was skillful, he was a hardworker, he could score goals from anywhere. I heard somebody saying, ‘Saleng scored a goal that Jomo never scored’,” the Orlando Pirates great added.

That was in 2022. We are now in 2024, and there is a wonderful kid named Relebohile Mofokeng. – READ THE FULL STORY HERE.
