Moroka Swallows not letting go of AmaZulu target Akpeyi

The latest word surrounding the future of Moroka Swallows keeper and AmaZulu target Daniel Akpeyi is that coach Steve Komphela doesn’t want to let him go.

As recently reported by The South African, AmaZulu wanted to lure Akpeyi to Durban but it seems he is going nowhere.

Isolezwe reported that Usuthu wanted to bring experienced goalkeepers such as Akpeyi, and Siyabonga Mpontshane of Orlando Pirates is also a target.

SWALLOWS NOT LETTING GO OF AMAZULU TARGET AKPEYI

The Durban-based AmaZulu are said to be hunting for a seasoned keeper who will compete with Veli Mothwa hence the interest in Akpeyi.

According to media reports, that is when Akpeyi, Mpontshane, and King Ndlovu’s names were discussed by AmaZulu technical team led by coach Pablo Franco Martin.

Having joined Swallows on a short-term deal in January, this publication understands the former Kaizer Chiefs keeper, Akpeyi is not happy with the package offered by the Dube Birds.

His manager approached the Dobsonville-based club to improve the package, but the club reportedly said no, allowing him to look for offers elsewhere.

The IsiZulu publication reports that Usuthu came knocking with an enticing offer but this happened when Komphela just arrived – and it seems the coach turned down the offer from the PSL rivals.

“What is being discussed is that Akpeyi must be given the salary package he wants,” said the source.

“It seems Swallows will be forced to pay him the money he wants because Komphela said Akpeyi is going nowhere.

“Akpeyi is experienced and he is one of the players he wants to build the team around next season.

“He likes the fact that Akpeyi has international experience with Nigeria and he did well for Swallows last season.”

AMAZULU LOOKING TO SIGN MPONTSHANE FROM PIRATES

This publication reported this week that Usuthu are also looking to lure Pirates veteran goalkeeper Mpontshane to Durban.

According to media reports in the province, the veteran keeper could be courted by AmaZulu who are looking to beef up their goalkeeping department.

Besides the former Platinum Stars keeper, Usuthu are said to be eyeing Nigerian gloveman, Akpeyi who is with the Dube Birds, Swallows.
