Marumo Gallants confirm two employees still held hostage in Libya

Marumo Gallants have confirmed that two of their employees are still held hostage in Libya, but they assured the public that they are safe.

On 19 March, Media Liaison Rufus Matsena and Physiotherapist Tebogo Dhlomo were detained at a hotel in Libya over a payment dispute.

However, Gallants were not prepared to go public on the matter, at least until TODAY, Monday, instead, they denied the story when it first broke.

Now, in a statement released on Monday, Gallants confirmed that the duo are still detained in Libya and that they are waiting for the matter to be resolved.

Gallants promised to set the record straight on the matter as soon as both Matsena and Dhlomo are released and back in the country.

MARUMO GALLANTS STATEMENT ON TWO EMPLOYEES IN LIBYA

“Following the CAF Confederation Cup match against Libya’s Al Akhdar on 19 March 2023, the PSL team’s two staff members (Media Liaison Rufus Matsena and team physiotherapist Tebogo Amos Dhlomo) were detained at a Libyan hotel over a financial dispute,” reads the statement.

“Marumo Gallants management are in contact with the two employees, who have confirmed that they are safe and waiting for the matter to be settled.

“Once the issue has been resolved, the club will address questions and concerns at a media briefing – platform and details to be announced. There are no further comments from Marumo Gallants F.C. at this point.”

MARUMO GALLANTS THROUGH TO CAF CONFEDERATION CUP QUARTER-FINALS

Meanwhile, Marumo Gallants will continue participating in the CAF Confederation Cup despite the current challenges after topping their group.

Gallants finished top of Group A with 12 points, and interestingly, they find themselves rock bottom on the DStv Premiership log with 20 points after 23 games.

They are the only South African team remaining in the CAF Confederation Cup, and the second PSL team in CAF inter-club competitions alongside Mamelodi Sundowns.
