Despite showering Kaizer Chiefs’ Sibongiseni Mthethwa with praise, Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos snubbed Amakhosi stars – Mamelodi Sundowns legend explains why.

Sundowns legend Hlompho Kekana explores what might have caused Broos to snub Chiefs stars for AFCON.

The 1996 African champions headed to AFCON in Cote d’Ivoire without a single player from Chiefs and Kekana says the Belgian, Broos looked at a number of factors.

‘KK’ states that Broos might have snubbed Chiefs stars because he looked at the stats from the start of the current DStv Premiership campaign.

The fact that Chiefs stars are snubbed could be because they have had a slow start into the season while Sundowns boast 10 players in the Bafana squad mentored by Broos.

SUNDOWNS LEGEND ON WHY BROOS SNUBBED CHIEFS STARS

Taking a glance at the build-up to the AFCON showpiece, Chiefs star midfielder Mthethwa and centre-back Given Msimango were named in the provisional squad by Broos.

However, both Mthethwa and Msimango were snubbed by Broos and the former Cameroon manager opted to call Orlando Pirates star Thabang Monare for AFCON duties.

On the other hand, many expected to see Pule Mmodi in the squad but Broos invited Polokwane City’s Oswin Appollis – snubbing another Chiefs star.

“I think the coach chose based on what he saw since the beginning of the season till now,” Kekana told FARPost.

“So, what he saw, you and I can sit here have opinions and opinion doesn’t really going to change the situation now.

“I think we just have to support the boys. We support the boys for the fact that they are going to represent the South African flag.”

As things stand, the Soweto giants are only represented by defender Edmilson Dove who is part of the Mozambique AFCON squad in the West African nation.

NO CHIEFS OR SUNDOWNS PLAYER IN BAFANA SQUAD – LEGEND

The multi-DStv Premiership or PSL title winner with Sundowns, Kekana adds that all the players in the Bafana squad are at AFCON to hoist the South African flag.

“I think more than anything as South Africans, if we could forget who plays for whom and focus more on the badge is important,” adds the Sundowns legend.

“I look at the rugby boys; they don’t care about who plays for whom. They care about the end result, which is to bring the trophy.

“If we take that mentality, I think we will go far in our football.”
