Mamelodi Sundowns latest: Mailula is Rhulani’s trusted weapon

Mamelodi Sundowns attacker Cassius Mailula continued to prove just why he is Rhulani Mokwena’s dangerous and trusted weapon this season.

Mamelodi Sundowns attacker Cassius Mailula continued to prove just why he is Rhulani Mokwena‘s dangerous and trusted weapon this season.

On Friday, Mailula netted his second and third CAF Champions League group stage goals in two matches as Sundowns beat Coton Sport 3-1.

As a result, Sundowns moved to six points and top of the Group B log, and on course to qualify for the quarter-finals of this year’s competition.

Now, Mailula’s brace against Coton Sport took him to 12 goals across all competitions this season, and he’s Sundowns’ leading goalscorer.

But it doesn’t end there… Mailula has contributed five assists in the Sundowns colours this season, meaning he has directly been involved in 17 goals so far.

According to OptaJabu, no player has been involved in more goals for Sundowns this season than the talented 21-year-old attacker.

CASSIUS MAILULA TAKES OVER FROM PETER SHALULILE AT MAMELODI SUNDOWNS

Mailula appears to be following in the footsteps of Peter Shalulile, who single-handedly powered Sundowns to a domestic treble last season.

Shalulile contibuted to the majority of Sundowns goals last season, scoring 30 goals and seven assists in 45 competitive matches.

Now, while Mailula isn’t yet at that Shalulile level, he is certainly doing the most to repay the faith shown to him by Mokwena.

And it remains to be seen how many goals and assists he would have contributed come the end of the season in May.
