Bafana Bafana’s Dutch-born striker, Lars Veldwijk is determined to make an impression in his second bite at international football.

Ahead of the crucial Afcon 2019 qualifier against Libya, the 27-year-old is in line to add to his sole cap for South Africa, which he earned in a one-all draw against Mozambique in a friendly match in November 2016.

Veldwijk has found his way back into the national call-up, thanks to red-hot goal-scoring form for Dutch first-division side Sparta Rotterdam, where he has banged in 17 goals in 29 league appearances.

Lars Veldwijk happy to be back in the Bafana mix

Standing at 1.96m, he believes his notable frame will be advantageous, as he seeks to take his club form into the international arena.

“I am a striker, and all I want to do is score goals.

“I think that my height will play a vital role for Bafana Bafana if I am tasked to play the number nine position against Libya or come off the bench to make an impact.

“We worked on some very exciting combinations this morning during training, and the players really put in so great efforts in all departments. We should have what it takes to do well, come Sunday.

“We have a very good squad here, and all the players are very dedicated and true professionals. It is very nice for me to be back in the team and see some old, familiar and new faces.”

D-day for Bafana

South Africa is second behind Nigeria in Group E of the qualifiers, two points ahead of third-placed Libya, while Seychelles are out of the running for a place in the finals to be held in Egypt from June.

This means that Bafana only need a point to join the Super Eagles in the main event, while only maximum points will do for the Mediterranean Knights.

Kick off on Sunday is at 19:00.
