Playing in their final scheduled international before the FIFA Women’s World Cup later in the year Serbia beat Banyana Banyana 3 – 2 on Monday, 10 April in a five-goal thriller.

Serbia build winning lead in 22 MINUTES

The hosts wasted no time finding the back of the net. Serbia ranked 35th in the world built up a 3 – 0 lead in just 22 minutes.

Opening the scoring in the eighth minute, defender Violeta Slovic found the back of the net taking the score to 1 – 0 to Serbia. Italian Serie A club Fiorentina’s Milica Mijatovic followed suit making it 2-0 in the 16th minute and in the 22nd minute. Serbia completed their hattrick as Bayern Munich striker, Jovana Damnjanovic took the lead to 3 – 0.

South Africa fight back

After their warm welcome onto the field, Hildah Magaia opened the visitors account scoring half an hour in allowing Banyana Banyana to go into the break 3 – 1 down. Jermaine Seoposenwe scored the only goal of the second half as South Africa narrowed the gap to 3 – 2 in the 79th minute as Serbia beat Banyana Banyana.

2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup will be hosted by Australia and New Zealand in July and August this year.

Banyana Banyana will play the following fixtures during the opening round of the tournament:

  • South Africa v Sweden on 23 July at 07:00 CAT (currently ranked 3rd)
  • South Africa v Argentina on 28 July at 02:00 CAT (currently ranked 28th)
  • South Africa v Italy on 2 August at 09:00 CAT (currently ranked 16th)

South Africa secured their place in the tournament after winning the Women’s African Cup of Nations in 2022 and is currently ranked 54th in the world.
