The 34-year-old, nicknamed “Bibo,” was released on R1,000 bail after being charged with assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

Allegations of Violence at Home

Ntshumayelo’s girlfriend alleges the incident occurred at his home on Friday, February 2. While Ntshumayelo and his friends were involved in an altercation, she intervened to calm him down.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson, Phindi Mjonondwane, detailed the accusation: “Ntshumayelo then allegedly became aggressive towards her, by slapping her across the face, grabbed her by her head and hit it against the wall. She further alleges that he then pushed her to the ground.”

Awaiting Trial, Following in the Footsteps of Another Orlando Pirates Player

Ntshumayelo’s case has been postponed for further investigation until April 4. This follows a similar incident involving another former Orlando Pirates player, Thembinkosi Lorch, who received a suspended sentence and fine for assaulting his ex-girlfriend in December 2023.

Gender-based violence activists criticized Lorch’s sentence as lenient, highlighting the ongoing fight against domestic abuse.

Football Career and Past Controversy

Ntshumayelo retired from professional football last year after a successful career spanning over a decade. He played for prominent South African clubs like SuperSport United and, of course, Orlando Pirates, earning international caps for South Africa.

However, his career was tarnished by a 2016 suspension for testing positive for a banned substance, later reduced on appeal.

Orlando Pirates and the Shadow of Domestic Violence

Ntshumayelo’s case throws light on the concerning prevalence of domestic violence, particularly involving individuals associated with renowned clubs like Orlando Pirates.

As highlighted by Reverend June Dolley-Major regarding Lorch’s sentence, “the judiciary doesn’t seem to realise the effects that violence has on a person.” The upcoming trial will be closely watched, with the hope that justice will be served, and a strong message sent against gender-based violence, both within and beyond the world of Orlando Pirates and South African football.
