Burnley manager Vincent Kompany says his striker Lyle Foster ‘lost it completely’ before he was given time off by the club.

The Bafana Bafana striker has since made progress and returned to the club last month.

He was out of the team for seven weeks to concentrate on building his mental health at Burnley.

Last week, Foster withdrew himself from contention for the Bafana squad for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations(Afcon).

“We were dealing with a human tragedy really, a young lad who had lost it completely — such a good lad as well,” Kompany was quoted on The Guardian.

“To see him get back up, just enjoying the game, being out there on the pitch with his teammates, smiling after the game, I can go away from being a manager [and] as a human being, I’m really happy to be part of this moment,” he said.

Last month, Kompany said Lyle Foster’s desire was to play for his country but said the decision was not in his hands.

“The conflict of course is that he loves to play for his country. Even from my side, the AFCON is a big trophy, it’s a big competition.

“It’s important for me as an African coach to support the competition, but it’s not up to me. I just relay [the message].

“We’ve done everything for the human being to this point, there’s no reason to change all of a sudden now,” said Kompany.
