Kaizer Chiefs’ interim coach, Cavin Johnson, remains optimistic about the potential of struggling foreign strikers, Jasond Gonzalez and Christian Saile, asserting that they possess the requisite skills to proudly don the prestigious Amakhosi jersey.

Gonzalez, on loan from Bolivian club Real Santa Cruz, has faced scrutiny for his limited impact since joining Chiefs in September, prompting questions about his signing.

Expressing hope for Gonzalez’s goal-scoring breakthrough, Johnson acknowledged the challenges faced by strikers, likening them to goalkeepers, emphasising the difficulty of translating training success into match situations.

Despite Saile contributing four goals since his arrival in January, Johnson is eager for Gonzalez to make his mark, stating, “I hope that he’s able to get his head or feet scoring – whatever they have to do, and maybe it will come better,” as per SABC Sport.

Addressing the broader difficulty foreign players encounter when adapting to the South African game, Johnson highlighted the linguistic barrier, particularly for those who speak French or Spanish.

Language barrier and responsibility

He acknowledged the need for South Africans to enhance their fluency in these languages, attributing the struggle to his own responsibility as a coach. Johnson expressed, “I blame myself for that as well because, when I’m a coach and I’m able to [speak other languages like Spanish or French], for sure my player will get better quicker.”

Despite these challenges, Johnson commended both Gonzalez and Saile as not only skilled strikers but also good individuals.

He emphasised the complexities of adapting to a new country’s football dynamics and urged patience, recognizing the unique difficulties foreign players face in acclimating to the South African game.

In navigating these hurdles, Johnson sees the potential for both Gonzalez and Saile to flourish and contribute significantly to Kaizer Chiefs, underscoring their value as talented individuals working to overcome the challenges inherent in their foreign football journey.
