CAF approves HUGE prize money hike for AFCON winners

CAF’s Executive Committee has increased the prize money on offer at the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon.

CAF’s Executive Committee has increased the prize money on offer at the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cameroon.

The decision was taken at a CAF Executive Committee meeting chaired by president Patrice Motsepe in Douala, Cameroon, on Friday.

The increase is in line with CAF’s commitment to reward merit performance and enhance the status of the Africa Cup of Nations.

It will come into effect in the upcoming edition which will kick off at the Olembe Stadium, Yaoundé on Sunday, 9 January with a Group A match between hosts Cameroon and Burkina Faso at 18:00 SA time.

A total of $1.850 million extra will be on offer with the winner now walking away a cool $5 million (R78 million) richer.

Sadly, that won’t be Bafana Bafana who will be home watching the tournament on TV having failed to qualify.

New Africa Cup of Nations prize money:

Winner: $5 million (an increase of $500 000)

Runner-up: $2.75 million (an increase of $250 000)

Semi-finalists: $2.2 million (an increase of $200 000)

Quarter-finalists: $1.175 million (an increase of $175 000)
