Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has spoken with remarkable directness about his primary request for PSL chairman Dr Irvin Khoza. The Belgian coach, credited with South Africa’s third-place finish at the 2023 AFCON finals, desires a comprehensive meeting with all DStv Premiership coaches.

Since taking the helm of Bafana in 2021, Broos has yet to have this all-encompassing meeting. He believes a single, collaborative gathering arranged by Dr Khoza is far preferable to individual discussions.

Broos on the Importance of Collaboration

“I don’t want to make 16 trips, 16 times to say the same story to a coach,” Broos explained. “When everyone is there, we can have a discussion… This is what I wanted from the beginning when I was here. This is what we discussed with Mr Khoza, but there are other things too.”

Broos Asks PSL Clubs for Collaboration

Broos also urged the PSL to make sure clubs release players for smaller competitions like the CHAN and COSAFA Cup. This, he believes, is crucial for player development.

“We have new players now and these new players you can only see when they play for Bafana,” Broos said. “…I can’t always test the players with Bafana Bafana because if you play qualifiers, you can’t risk that it will not succeed.”

He stresses the value of these smaller tournaments for gaining international experience and improving Bafana Bafana’s overall performance.

Collaboration is Key for South African Football

Broos emphasizes that collaboration between the national team and PSL clubs is indispensable for South Africa to remain competitive internationally. He calls for participation in tournaments like CHAN, the Olympics, AFCON, and the World Cup.

SAFA president Danny Jordaan has indicated that a meeting between Broos and the PSL boss could happen as early as this week. Broos is currently focused on this month’s friendlies against Andorra and Algeria, Bafana’s first matches since winning bronze at the 2023 AFCON finals.
