Pitso Mosimane spills the tea and reveals what former Zambia coach Herve Renard told him as he was linked with a job at SAFA.

Renard was heavily linked with the Bafana Bafana coaching job at SAFA and Mosimane says the French man was offered peanuts.

Speaking to South African football journalists, ‘Jingles’ reveals that Renard was considered as a strong candidate for the Bafana job.

However, it emerged that the Nasrec-based SAFA was not prepared to break the bank at the time but hired Hugo Broos.

A two-time AFCON winner with Zambia’s Chipolopolo and Cote d’Ivoire’s Elephants, Renard was considered a strong candidate for the Bafana job several times over the last decade.

“I remember speaking to the coach of Saudi Arabia [at the time], Herve Renard, good guy, top guy, we text and talk; he said coach why don’t you coach South Africa?” says Mosimane per iDiski Times.

“I mean the country has got mines, diamonds and everything, so the sports budget should be able to pay you to coach the team.

“So I’m talking about the situation between federation and government, and the guy said but no you must coach Bafana.”

MOSIMANE ROOTED FOR RENARD TO LEAD 1996 AFCON WINNERS

Currently clubless, the former Mamelodi Sundowns mentor, Mosimane says he really wanted to see Renard leading Bafana.

The 1996 AFCON winners are now led by Broos who has qualified for the continental tournament to be staged in January next year.

“I think you will do well for our country – he said coach, I don’t think they’re serious, my agent told me the money they want to pay is like club football in division two in France,” adds Mosimane.

“But your country is successful look at it, when you land at the airport, you have everything but you don’t have [budget for top coaches], they won’t pay me to coach South Africa.”
