Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has praised his assistant Helman Mkhalele for spotting overweight players.

The 71-year-old mentor praised Mkhalele’s lack of ‘South African mentality’ saying he is the reason the national team is doing well.

Broos was brought in as Bafana coach back in 2021 and Chedomir Janevski served as his first assistant before ‘Midnight Express’ joined the national team.

A year after Broos took over, Janevski left the post and the Bafana coach approached Belgian legend Franky Van Der Elst to be his assistant.

Speaking on the Frank and Franky podcast, the Bafana coach said he should have asked Elst immediately after the Macedonian left.

“I asked Frank but he wasn’t keen on going abroad at the time but the problem is that I should have done it immediately,” Broos said.

“I already had such a good bond with the South African(Mkhalele) and mentally he is not South African,” he said as per Soccer Laduma.

On the podcast, Broos was full of praise for the ex-Bafana Bafana winger, calling him a disciplinarian.

“He reasons with discipline and he also says himself that they don’t work well here[In South Africa] and that is true. The first month I was there, I also saw big butts, how is that possible? He also saw that some of the players were five kilos too fat, he is against all that,” Broos added.

The Bafana Bafana coach also revealed in the same interview that he desired to leave his job.

It remains to be seen if Broos will continue as Bafana coach in the coming weeks.
