Petersen has recently risen to the top of the Amakhosi goalkeeping pecking order ahead of Daniel Akpeyi, Itumeleng Khune and Bruce Bvuma.

The shot-stopper has had to wait patiently for his chance and has grabbed the opportunity with both hands.

The 27-year-old was fantastic in the Soweto derby victory over Orlando Pirates, pulling off two fantastic saves in the closing stages to secure the victory for the Glamour Boys.

Petersen has been named as one of FOUR goalkeepers in Hugo Broos’ Bafana Bafana squad alongside SuperSport United’s Ronwen Williams, team-mate Bvuma and AmaZulu’s Veli Mothwa.

Bafana Bafana’s goalkeeping coach Grant Johnson said that Petersen is one of the in-form ‘keepers in the country at the moment and that is why he has cracked the nod.

“Obviously with the local goalkeepers there’s not a lot of them, so we’ve got to go with who is playing currently and who is performing currently,” Johnson told Kickoff.

“So he’s been playing really well, and we are happy with his performance.

“So basically we watched him over the weekend and he had a good game, so there are no issues with that [current form].

“I think he’s got the opportunity, the improvement that I’ve seen, his distribution has got a lot better and just his general confidence is good.

“He looks fit, he looks sharp, and when you are assessing a goalkeeper those are the things that you look for.”

The South African national team will travel to Belgium to take on Guinea on Friday, March 25 before facing current world champions France on their home turf on Tuesday, March 29.

France are ranked third in the most recent FIFA rankings, with South Africa in 68th place and Guinea 81st.
