Bafana Bafana have their best of playing in the FIFA World Cup since hosting it back in 2010 after the new format was announced.

The new format will see 48 teams compete with a minimum of NINE African sides guaranteed places in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

This is a substantial increase from the original 32-team format that had five CAF Spot’s allocated. Therefore, South Africa have their best chance of qualifying with almost double the spots available for African sides. Furthermore, their will be an intercontinental play-off to determine which continent earns the extra place.

WHAT BAFANA BAFANA NEED TO DO TO QUALIY FOR FIFA WORLD CUP

Bafana Bafana will have to win their group to earn automatics qualification into the FIFA World Cup.

They will be grouped with one of the tier 1 nations (Morocco, Senegal, Tunisia, Algeria, Egypt, Nigeria, Cameroon, Mali and Ivory Coast).

Furthermore, even if they are unable to win their group they can still qualify.

This is because the four best placed finishers will enter into a play-off race to determine who competes in the inter-confederation play-off.

BROOS AND SOUTH AFRICA LOOKING TO RETURN TO THE WORLD STAGE

South Africa last played in the 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifying by virtue of default because they were the host nation.

Meaning, the last SA side to qualify for the World Cup was the 2002 generation.

Hugo Broos and this generation will be looking to change that with more spots available in the global showpiece than ever before. With the likes of Percy Tau, Lyle Foster, Monnapule Saleng, Miguel Timm, they could certainly finish in the top NINE in Africa.
