Bafana Bafana coach names preliminary squad to face DR Congo

Hugo Broos has called up eight new names ahead of Bafana Bafana’s two friendlies next month as they prepare for next year’s Afcon.

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has named a 36-member preliminary squad for the upcoming international friendly matches against Namibia and DR Congo next month.

Broos’ charges will play two friendly matches in September as they look to prepare for the Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire in January next year. Bafana’s last match was a 2-1 Afcon qualifier match against Morocco in June and Broos’ team is now unbeaten in seven matches.

Bafana host neighbhours Namibia on 9 September 2023 and DR Congo on 12 September. The venues of the two matches will be confirmed in the coming days.

Bafana prepare for AFCON

The preliminary squad will be trimmed to 23 players next week when Broos announces his final list for the two matches.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be jointly hosted by Canada, Mexico, and the United States of America. The World Cup qualifiers will start in November this year and wrap up in 2025. The Africa Cup of Nations will be held from 13 January to 11 February 2024.

Defenders: Sydney Mobbie, Aubrey Modiba, Grant Kekana, Mothobi Mvala, Innocent Maela, Nkosinathi Sibisi, Thabiso Monyane, Siyanda Xulu, Ime Okon, Sfiso Hlanti, Given Msimango, Keegan Allan, Zuko Mdunyelwa
