In what will come as the biggest shock, Bafana Bafana assistant coach Helman Mkhalele doesn’t have required qualifications to lead the team in the COSAFA Cup.

Mkhalele, who has been one of Hugo Broos’ assistants only has SAFA Level 1 coaching license, and that alone has made him ineligible to lead Bafana Bafana in this year’s tournament.
According to CAF rules, only coaches with the CAF Pro, CAF A or CAF B licenses are allowed to lead their respective countries at senior level.

And Mkhalele doesn’t have any of those, hence the South African Football Association (SAFA) asked Morena Ramoreboli of Jwaneng Galaxy to step in as Bafana Bafana head coach for the 2023 COSAFA Cup tournament.
Mkhalele confirmed to Sowetan that he only has SAFA Level 1 licenses and tried to save his face by saying the association is working on converting it into a CAF qualification.

What raises the eyebrows, though, is the fact that Mkhalele has all the time and resources in the world to improve his coaching badges and has done nothing about it.
This also reflects bad on SAFA who, through Technical Director, Walter Steenbok, said it was irresponsible of PSL coaches not to have the required qualifications.

Steenbok singled out both Vusimuzi Vilakazi and Mabhuti Khenyeza who don’t have any coaching qualifications, as well as Musa Nyatama of Swallows FC who recently did his CAF C license.

“My licence hasn’t been converted to CAF but the association (Safa) is working towards addressing that issue. I currently have a Safa level one licence, so the plan is to convert it to CAF,” Mkhalele told Sowetan.
