Al Ahly director: Pitso Mosimane is the ‘highest-paid coach’

Al Ahly Sporting Director Sayed Abdelhafiz has laughed off claims that coach Pitso Mosimane could have been lured to Zamalek.

Mosimane has enjoyed great success during his time with Al Ahly, having lifted several trophies, while recently leading the team to a bronze medal at the Club World Cup.

Mosimane is reported to have received a renewed contract around R2.5m-a-month to remain with the Egypt club, with plenty of debate having centred around the negotiations.

In a wide-ranging interview for the On The Whistle Podcast, Mosimane recently “talked about renewing his contract, potentially coaching in the MLS and his reservations around the African Super League”.

However, Zamalek president Mortada Mansour recently made a bold proclamation that he could have brought Mosimane to the Cairo club.

In a statement on the AlHadath TV channel, Mansour revealed that he had the opportunity to snatch Mosimane away from Ahly, but chose not to pursue it.

“If I wanted to bring Mosimane to Zamalek I could have done it, but I will not do that out of respect for Al Ahly fans,” he said.

“A number of Al Ahly players wanted to join Zamalek but I refused, and when I signed Abdallah El-Said, his contract with Al Ahly was about to expire….

“I swear to god Pitso Mosimane’s wife [his agent Moira] was negotiating with Amir Mortada last month for him to coach Zamalek. But I told Amir not to do so because I respect Al Ahly’s fans,” he added on his Youtube Channel.

However, Abdelhafiz has since suggested this was never a plausible situation.

“I won’t stop anyone from talking. But it doesn’t make sense, this is a coach who wants to win trophies, why would he want to join another team?” Abdelhafiz commented.

“Even from a financial point of view, we are talking about the highest-paid coach.”
