South Africa and PSL referee Abongile Tom appears to have taken the baton from the retired Victor Gomes on the international stage.

Tom is among the 25 referees and 38 assistant referees selected for the FIFA U20 World Cup which will be hosted by Argentina this year.

The global youth tournament is scheduled to take place between 20 May and 11 June where 24 teams will battle out for the ultimate prize money.

And Tom will have the honour to represent South Africa as the only referee selected for the tournament by FIFA from the SADC region.

ABONGILE TOM TO OFFICIATE IN CAF CONFEDERATION CUP ON SUNDAY

More good news is that Tom will be officiating a CAF Confederation Cup quarter-final match between Rivers United and Yanga SC on Sunday.

He spent this past week in Cairo where CAF held a preparatory course for 70 match officials that will oversee the quarter-final stage of both the CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup.

It is only fair to note that Tom is slowly following in the footsteps of Gomes who flew the South African flag for years both on the continent and on the international stage before retiring in December 2022.
