South African football fans will be pleased to learn that two PSL referees have been handed professional contracts by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

Abongile Tom and Akhona Makalima will reportedly be earning monthly salaries from the CAF, and they are among the only 25 referees (20 males and 5 females) who will be enjoying this benefit.

The rest of the other African referees will continue to earn their salaries per match, and their respective associations will continue to bear the costs.

This is one of the first steps towards taken by CAF to professionalise refereeing in Africa, and more referees and assistant referees are expected to join the list.

ABONGILE TOM AND AKHONA MAKALIMA EARN PROFESSIONAL CONTRACTS FROM CAF

“The Confederation of African Football has given 25 match officials professional contracts, including two South African referees,” reports iDiski Times.

“The 20 males also include South African stand-out referee Abongile Tom, who has picked up the baton from retired Victor Gomez in representing Mzansi on the continental and global stage.

“In addition, female referee Akhona Makalima was also among the 25 referees honoured by CAF, flying the South African flag.”

MORE GOOD NEWS FOR PSL REFEREE ABONGILE TOM

Meanwhile, Tom is among the 25 referees and 38 assistant referees selected for the FIFA U20 World Cup which will be hosted by Argentina this year.

The global youth tournament is scheduled to take place between 20 May and 11 June where 24 teams will battle out for the ultimate prize money.

And Tom, 31, will have the honour to represent South Africa as the only referee selected for the tournament by FIFA from the SADC region.
