In other news, there was a serious shoulder injury suffered by Sharks and Springboks scrumhalf Jaden Hendrikse which will keep him out for at least 10 weeks.

LIVE UPDATES: SPRINGBOKS’ ROAD TO THE RUGBY WORLD CUP

Hendrikse was injured in the first-half of the Sharks’ Champions Cup playoff match against Munster at Kings Park on Saturday and had to make an early exit from the game.

Following confirmation of the extent of the injury, Hendrikse was forced to undergo corrective surgery and will be out of action for at least two and a half months.

IMPLICATIONS FOR SHARKS AND SPRINGBOKS

This means Sharks boss Neil Powell will not only have to make do without his first-choice No 9 in their Champions Cup quarter-final against Toulouse in France on Saturday, but will probably be without Hendrikse’s services for the remainder of the URC and Champions campaigns.

Hendrikse, who has risen to second-choice scurmhalf in the Springboks’ pecking order behind only Faf de Klerk, now also face the very real possibility of missing South Africa’s Rugby Championship campaign. Though it is expected what he would make a full recovery before the World Cup, that too is not a given.

TEAMS SWEATING OVER ETZEBETH INJURY

Meanwhile, the Sharks and Springboks are also anxiously awaiting news on the extent f talisman Eben Etzebeth’s injury, which he suffered in the same match.

Etzebeth appeared to have picked up a knock in the first half, but played until the half-time break. He then failed to return to the field in the second half.
