1995 World Cup winning Springbok lock Kobus Wiese wrote on Twitter: “Ian Mcintosh has passed away, a truly sad day. Fewer men has left such an impact through the great game of rugby on so many lives. His passion and commitment to the game was legendary. Mooi loop Uncle, may you rest on Peace”

2007 Springbok World Cup winner Bryan Habana wrote on Twitter: “RIP Master. Mr Ian Mac was a truly remarkable man, mentor, coach, husband, father and human being. His passion and dedication to the game of the rugby was beyond measure!! His love for life and humour made a positive impact to all those who got the privilege to meet him. Keeping his family and loved in our thoughts and prayers.”

Schalk Burger Senior tweeted: “A real rugby legend has left us …. RIP Mac …. priviledged to have kown you well!!”

Commentator Andy Capastagno wrote on social media: “The man who called everyone ‘Master’ has left us on the eve of The Masters. When I persuaded Supersport to honour Mac with a documentary on his life, I had no idea how close he was to the end. To a great man and an even greater man of rugby, RIP”

SA Rugby Legends posted: “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Ian McIntosh – a great man of rugby who gave back so much and worked tirelessly to promote the game of rugby. #RIP Master. Our love and thoughts are with his wife Rhona and the McIntosh family.We are going to miss you.”

The Master passes on

The legendary former Springbok and Sharks coach McIntosh passed away during the early hours of Wednesday morning. The cause of death has not yet been divulged.

McIntosh, who grew up near Bulawayo in Zimbabwe, served as head coach for the Springboks during 1993 and 1994. In total, he oversaw 12 Tests as coach, with the Springboks winning four games, drawing two and losing six.

Prior to that stint at the helm of the Springboks, McIntosh famously coached the legendary Natal team during the late 1980s and early 1990s.
