As the URC heads into its penultimate round of regular season fixtures and several teams fighting for a spot in the playoffs, here’s an explainer of what each team needs to do to qualify.

SOUTH AFRICAN SIDES

Stormers (2nd) — Crowned South African Shield winners, secured a home semi-final in the URC and qualified for the Champions Cup.

Bulls (7th) — Needs seven points to guarantee their place in the playoffs and will likely require top seven finish to qualify for the Champions Cup.

Sharks (8th) — Nine log points will guarantees them a playoff spot and will likely require top seven finish to qualify for the Champions Cup.

Lions (11th) — Ten points plus other results needed to reach the playoffs (17% chance).

OTHER URC TEAMS

Leinster (1st) — Crowned Irish Shield winners, assured of home playoff games and Champions Cup qualified.

Ulster (3rd) — Guaranteed a place in the playoff, but playing for a second-place finish to get a home semi-final. Champions Cup qualified.

Glasgow Warriors (4th) — Crowned Scots/Italian Shield winner, booked a placed in playoffs but playing for a home quarter-final. Qualified for the Champions Cup.

Munster (5th) — Need two log points to book a place in the URC playoffs. Will likely require top seven finish to qualify for the Champions Cup.

Connacht (6th) — Need six points to advance to the playoffs and will likely require top seven finish to qualify for the Champions Cup.

Benetton (9th) — Need 10 log points to progress to the URC playoffs and will likely require top seven finish to qualify for the Champions Cup.

Cardiff (10th) — Current Welsh Shield leader and if they do claim the shield they will qualify for the Champions Cup. Have a 20% chance of reaching the URC playoffs.

Ospreys (12th) — Have a 1% chance of reaching the URC knockout stage. Could win Welsh Shield, which brings with it automatic qualification for the Champions Cup.

Scarlets (13th) — Have a 1% chance of reaching the URC knockout stage. Could win Welsh Shield, which brings with it automatic qualification for the Champions Cup.

Edinburgh (14th) — Have a 1% chance of reaching the URC knockout stage.

Dragons (15th) — Have no chance of making the URC playoffs.

Zebre (16th) — Have no chance of making the URC playoffs.
