Where would Rassie Erasmus rank among fearsome coaches?

The Springboks’ Chasing the Sun 2 documentary has certainly revealed a ‘scary side’ to Rassie Erasmus during some stern team talks.

The Chasing the Sun 2 documentary, which reflects on the Springboks’ successful World Cup campaign last year, has already offered up a number of fascinating insights.

In the last two episodes, the documentary makers have also not been afraid to reveal just how frightening Rassie Erasmus can be during certain team talks.

The first episode – for example – provided a glimpse into a crucial moment during the Springboks’ progression through a challenging semi-final against England.

With the Springbok trailing 12-6 at half-time after a shocking performance in the first period, Erasmus stands angrily in the midst of a group of silent players.

“You promised me! You lied to me!” he yells at the players. “You’re a f****g liar!”

In the next episode he also calls out the players for a shocking performance against Ireland, telling many of them that they had lost control of their egos and forgotten what it means to be a Springbok.

Many social media users quickly highlighted how frightened they would be to find themselves on the receiving end of a furious team talk from Erasmus, who clearly doesn’t hold back when he feels the circumstances call for it.

So, where would Rassie Erasmus rank among other no-nonsense coaches?

All evidence suggests the Springbok boss would rank right up there with other coaches who are known for losing their cool at times when players don’t live up to expectations.

Michael Cheika

The former Wallabies coach would probably be at the top of the list, having been renowned for ranting and raving at players, particularly during furious half-time team talks.

Cheika has a real presence about him, and often would also unleash a barrage of frightening replies to journalists who he feel overstepped the mark.

Eddie Jones

There has been more than one report to suggest that Jones has ‘lost the changeroom’ when coaching certain teams due to the fact he is an incredible disciplinarian.

During his time as a coach, Jones has not only clashed with players, but also fans, journalists and opponents.

Jake White

The former school teacher, and now Bulls coach, is also a strict disciplinarian and straight talker who isn’t afraid to voice his opinion.

During his career, White has often ‘rubbed people up the wrong way’, and he is not someone you’d want to get on the wrong side of.

Brendan Venter

The fearsome former Springbok does not suffer fools gladly, and is widely regarded as one of the games great characters, but also as a straight shooter.

He also once became infamous for an interview with Sky Sports’ Martin Gillingham after Saracens had lost a European Cup tie to Racing 92 in December 2010. Venter famously opted to avoid providing any insights after he had been recently fined for complaining about referee.
